Alex Elkins is a freelance Film Editor and Colourist based in London

About

With close to 20 years of experience, my documentary editing work has been recognised with awards and nominations from the Royal Television Society (RTS Awards), the Golden Prague International Television Festival and the Grierson Awards, as well as screening at festivals such as Tribeca, DOC NYC, Sheffield DocFest and Aesthetica.

On the commercial side I’ve worked for major brands such as IKEA, P&G, Dolce & Gabbana and Audi, and with agencies including McCann, Saatchi & Saatchi, M&C Saatchi and Leo Burnett.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Beyond editing, I'm an experienced colourist and online editor, providing many of the picture-finishing and QC services typically offered by a post house. I have delivered series to the BBC and Channel 5 in recent years as well as creating DCP files for theatrical release.

This versatility allows me to maintain creative consistency throughout post-production, with projects benefitting from the time and efficiency gained in eliminating unnecessary back and forth.

Nowadays most of my work is done with DaVinci Resolve, though I am equally at home in Premiere and Avid, with a very good working knowledge of After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator, along with various other supporting applications.

Facilities

My client-friendly studio in East London is set up for attended sessions with the option to scale up for larger projects when called upon. The room (originally designed for music production) is acoustically-treated, making it a wonderful, calm environment to work from. It is equipped to handle offline editing, colour grading, online, QC and deliverables for broadcast.

I also offer a robust setup for remote projects, allowing collaborators to view a live, colour-accurate output from my suite.

Whether I’m editing a 30 second commercial or a feature doc, I pride myself on my ability to find the emotional heart of a story. So much of storytelling is about the power of indirect, subtle moments and I am fascinated with how those details draw out poignancy and character in my work.

I love working on films that focus on human creativity and expertise. Often these projects provide an opportunity to reflect that creativity in the filmmaking, and I take great pleasure in being part of that.
